So can Vincent and Cat be together kissing and hugging and sleeping together every episode for the next five years? No. We want them to earn their relationship. We felt like they came together so fast last year for all the right reasons, but that’s not how relationships stand the test of time. They come from such radically different backgrounds yet are joined by a common mythology we’ll discover and certainly a common history. Our mantra is that they need to explore who they are separately if they’re truly going to get together and stay together.

‘Sleeping Beauty’ springs to life at the Auditorium Theatre
As danced by Haley Henderson Smith, she was punkish and piquant, as purely nasty as a pro wrestler in the ring, kicking people gratuitously and landing with a flat-footed thud from standing on pointe as if to say, “Take that!” (Perhaps Ballet West’s reality-TV series, “Breaking Pointe,” partly inspired the mean girl’s head-tossing snits.) The fairy-tale variations of Act III are also fun, especially Amy Potter as the delightfully seductive, snooty White Cat in the Puss-in-Boots pas de deux. As Aurora, Christiana Bennett moved convincingly from charming, bashful 16-year-old to psychologically entombed incipient woman to serene bride. Though overall she was confident in the famously difficult Rose Adagio, the act of releasing her suitors’ supporting hand sometimes brought with it a look of uncertainty and once, outright terror. Bennett seemed more at ease as the remote vision that Prince Desire chases in Act II, and she excelled in Act III, particularly in the Grand Pas fish dives, where she plunged dramatically toward the floor. Among the other standouts were the buoyant Rex Tilton as Prince Desire and Christopher Sellars as the Bluebird, whose spectacular brises, legs beating front and back, truly flew. Peter Cazalet’s scenic design was suitably imposing, and the Chicago Sinfonietta feelingly played Tchaikovsky’s intricate score.
